Trenance Action Park, Newquay
The RHS Britain In Bloom Neighbourhood Awards 2009 have recognised the excellent work carried out by Groundwork at the Trenance Park in Newquay, by awarding a Neighbourhood Award of Merit. In 2008, Restormel Borough Council (now part of Cornwall Council) commissioned Groundwork to design and build an adventurous play space for older children in Newquay. Following workshops with 14-15 year olds from the area, young people identified climbing and street skating as their main requirements from the site. The final design created an innovative and adventurous teenage play and hang out space, incorporating a 3.5 metre high bespoke concrete climbing boulder as its centrepiece. The site also included a bespoke climbing net, climbing arch, soft and hard landscaping conducive for informal street-skating and free running, contemporary seating, street art and up-lighting. A mature tree provides a sculptural backdrop as well as shade. Consideration was given to provision of a space that would be challenging, exciting and appealing to young people, whilst still being safe, robust and straightforward to maintain.
